Nuisance Abatement Ordinance

A new tool in Trotwood's community-based policing approach is the City's new Nuisance Abatement Ordinance, which allows Police to shut down and close up any residential property where illegal drug activity consistently occurs. Initially, the owner or person responsible receives written notice declaring the property a public nuisance which then requires that everyone vacate or be evicted from the property.

Following that written notice:

  • Costs of securing it as a public nuisance can be billed
  • Failure or refusal to comply can result in criminal prosecution
  • Owner or person responsible must keep the property maintained
  • Premises must remain vacant for 365 days
