Making Shade to Improve Neighborhoods
The Land Bank and Ohio Department of Natural Resources have teamed up to reforest the area’s urban neighborhoods. Each organization has committed $25,000 to purchase and plant trees in neighborhoods that have experienced the loss of their canopy.
Studies show that neighborhoods with a strong tree canopy enjoy higher property values, cooler summertime temperatures, better physical and mental health, and less crime.
The program provides trees to homeowners who request them and have a record of responsible property ownership. Although they do not pay for the trees, homeowners must commit to maintaining them with proper watering and pruning. ODNR will provide the needed guidance on proper maintenance.
This spring, 40-50 trees will be planted. Eligible Montgomery County property owners in historically underserved neighborhoods may apply at the Land Bank’s website (https://mclandbank.com/forms/tree-equity-reforestation-program/)Â throughout the summer for fall planting.
- ODNR and Montgomery County Land Bank will provide and plant the 1″ – 2″ caliper tree, and provide individuals with the instruction and equipment for success!!
- You must be the owner of the home, be current on real estate taxes and not have nuisance or property code violations on all properties you own
- You must be willing to provide necessary care for your new tree
