The Trotwood Fire Department conducts annual inspections and functional testing of more than 1,345 fire hydrants throughout the City of Trotwood. As part of this routine maintenance, hydrant flushing is performed to ensure proper operation and to maintain water quality standards.
During this process, residents may experience temporary water discoloration, which may present as rusty or brown-tinted water. While this discoloration may be visually unappealing, it is not harmful and does not impact the safety of the water for drinking, bathing, cooking, or other household uses. However, it may cause staining of laundry if washing is done while discoloration is present.
Recommended Actions for Residents:
- If discoloration occurs, run cold water through your faucets for several minutes until the water runs clear.
- Flush toilets once or twice to help clear the system.
- If you notice a reduction in water pressure or volume, inspect your faucet screens for any trapped sediment or particles.
Important Safety Reminder: If you observe Fire Department personnel performing hydrant maintenance in your area, please exercise caution. Drive slowly and extend the same courtesies you would to any other utility or roadwork crew to ensure the safety of both workers and residents.
